Join us for an exciting exploration of the insect world in this educational program sponsored by The Friends of Northwest Park. We are delighted to bring to you this captivating presentation by Entomologist and Naturalist Matthew Nochisaki on the significance of local native wildlife with a focus on insects, and their relationships with plants, birds, and how it’s all interconnected.
This engaging program will commence with a 40-minute talk, live insect exhibition, and photo presentation by Matthew Nochisaki. As a respected Entomologist, Mr. Nochisaki will share his extensive knowledge and insights into the fascinating world of arthropods and their vital role in our ecosystem. Discover the incredible diversity and significance of native insects and the intricate balance they create.
Following the talk, we will venture further into the beautiful surroundings of Northwest Park to embark on a hands-on evening exploration. Walk through the Northwest Park trails in search of fireflies, bats, owls, and other nighttime specialties. Learn about many native plants, and their importance to the forest food webs.
Then after a brief snack break (snacks will be available or you can bring your own) as the sun begins to set, Matthew will set up a black light against a white sheet to attract and showcase the beautiful moths you never get to see during the day. We will uncover the hidden wonders of the insect world like you’ve never seen before. As insects are attracted to the sheet, Matthew Nochisaki will lead an interactive discussion on the various species we encounter, shedding light on their behavior, physical characteristics, and ecological contributions.
Whether you are an aspiring entomologist, a nature enthusiast, or just simply curious about the intricate web of life in our local ecosystem, this event is not to be missed. Expand your knowledge, foster a deeper appreciation for the natural world, and gain a newfound understanding of the importance of preserving our native habitats.

About the Presenter
Matthew Nochisaki is a 23-year-old Entomologist, and all around Naturalist with a passion for sharing the incredible biodiversity of the
world’s ecosystems. Growing up in South Windsor, he has dedicated his life to studying and promoting local biodiversity. Matthew developed a love for the natural world growing up, and pursued his Bachelor’s degree in Entomology at the University of Delaware. Currently residing in Baltimore, Maryland, he actively engages in research, education, and conservation efforts, inspiring others at the local level to appreciate and protect the natural world from their own backyard and hometown.

- Participants should bring a flashlight. This is an outdoor event. Chairs will be available, but participants are encouraged to bring their own lawn/folding chairs or picnic style setup for the presentation portion of the event.
